The Dewalt Dw718 dual bevel compound sliding miter saw is the flagship of the Dewalt miter saw lineup, able to do precision work on very large pieces. It has the capacity to crosscut a 16 inch shelf, cut 6-1/2” base vertically, and even handle 6-5/8-inch crown molding nested vertically.

Over the years Dewalt has deservedly built a reputation as a durable quality tool on jobsites everywhere. Around here, when you are on a site, the predominate color of the tools is yellow. That is not to say that other brands aren’t represented, just that Dewalt seems to be the most common tool on site. If the professionals are overwhelmingly using Dewalt, you know the performance and quality have to be good. You can’t accept poor performance from a tool when your livelihood and reputation are at stake.

“I am a carpenter by day and operate a small furniture building business nights and weekends. This saw has been with me for 2.5+ years now and gets used daily for all types of woodworking. Sometimes framing or trim, but mostly cutting parts for fine furniture. The blade that came with it is junk for anything but framing. With a good tune up and a Forrest Chopmaster blade, this saw is capable of doing extremely precision work…. haven’t even turned the laser on in the last 2 years. However, the saw gets used pretty much daily and continues to provide me with reliable, accurate cuts.“
When Dewalt redesigned their 12” slider to replace the Dw708, one of the changes they made was to go from a vertical arrangement of the slide rails to a more conventional side-by-side arrangement. Reviewers had noticed that with the old arrangement, the rails had a tendency to acquire a permanent “bow” over time. However, as with any major changes made to an established product, this new arrangement was not popular with everyone. This, along with an anti-import bias, seems to be the underlying reason behind a number of negative reviews the DeWalt DW718 has received, especially early on.

“Firstly, the table is smaller than the dw708, the rails are 1 inch in diameter (rather than the common 1 3/16″) this smaller rail system causes major power head deflection!!!! Accuracy is severely compromised by too much head flex – even worse is how over 14 inches of travel, the cut is out by about 16th of an inch, too much play in my opinion!”

Features of the DeWalt DW718
- Miters 0 to 60 degrees to the left and 0 to 50 degrees to the right
- 10 positive bevel stops
- Bevels 48 degrees left and right
- cut capacity up to 2 x 16 at 90 degrees

As for bad points, only two really stand out : The dust collection is not very good, and the slide rails can tend to get jerky.
I’ll leave you with these two comments
Scott A. Huguley Had this to say:
“I have owned my DW718 for a couple of months now and have not experienced any of the problems other reviewers have mentioned. I have found the saw to be strudy, well constructed and capable of repeated accurate cuts. I have used it to cut everything from crown moulding to large tembers. My saw is rather new so maybe many of the problems of earlier production have been corrected. I am quite pleased.”
And P. Anzalone said:
“I don’t understand how people could not review this saw at 4 stars or more….Again, great saw and if people are really having some of the issues they claim, then I think we must have gotten two totally different saws because I would buy this saw again in a heartbeat.” — P. Anzalone
