Bosch 5312 Review

.

Bosch 5312The Bosch 5312 Dual Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw continues the Bosch tradition of providing exceptional tools at a fair price.  It combines the large capacity of a 12″ slider with smoothness, accuracy and ease of use that must be the envy of lesser manufacturers.

A disclaimer: I own this saw, and though it is not the most used saw in my collection, when I do use it I find it a joy to work with.  It operates with exceptional smoothness and accuracy.

In researching the Bosch 5312, I came across an unusual phenomenon.  Generally when searching for comments on a tool by any manufacturer you will come across statements made by dissatisfied customers.  When checking out this saw I found none.

Oh, there were the usual comments about the fact that the dust collection is weak, and that the saw “might be”  heavy.  These knocks are common to this class of saw.  I have not personally had a miter saw with dust collection that I thought was particularly good, and all 12″ sliders are beasts.

And there was this review on Amazon:

Ian C. stated:

“I was seriously considering buying this saw, but I could not find a retailer that stocked it. I wanted to see it in person, so I called Bosch for a little help locating the saw in stock in my area. I was SHOCKED by what happened next.“

But this was just a complaint about the fact that the Bosch rep was unable to tell him where he could find a retailer that stocked the saw.  Hardly a criticism of the saw itself!

A more typical sentiment was voiced by Eric who said:

“After quite a bit of time working with this saw professionally, I have found it to be the most accurate, durable, fast to use, and easy to carry of the multitude I’ve come in contact with on the job site.”

Bosch has given attention to the types of details that make the saw a pleasure to use.  From the easy to use up front bevel angle lock, to the 4 position adjustable handle  that seems like a little thing but is a nice touch.  I prefer a D handle but many like the upright handle.  With the Bosch 5312 you can have either.

Features of the Bosch 5312

  • Large 25-1/2″ Base with Built-In Cast Sliding Extensions for 40″ total length
  • Tall 4-1/2 ” Speed-Track Sliding Fences — For easy bevel set-ups and increased crown molding cutting capacities
  • Easily Readable Bevel and Miter Scales — For easy setting of accurate bevel and miter angles
  • Exclusive Wedge-and-Slot Miter Detent System — Consistent and precise miter angles over the life of the tool
  • Miter Detent Override — For fast and precise angle adjustment
  • Crown Molding Settings — 31.6° miter and 33.9° bevel detents for quick, accurate crown cuts
  • Dual Sliding Rail Design — For superior accuracy
  • Electric brake — For quick, repetitive cuts. Stops blade in seconds
  • Powerful 3hp motor
  • Exclusive wedge-and-slot miter detent system – Consistent and precise miter angles over the life of the tool
  • Miter detent override – For fast and precise angle adjustment

Another nice touch – one of those that makes you smile when you spot it, is that the saw has a depth stop.  This allows you to make cuts part way through a workpiece like you would with a radial arm saw.  This is a great feature if you need to approximate dados or rabbits on site.

Fine Homebuilding reviewed the saw and had this to say:

“The Bosch is packed with innovative features, but the standout is excellent up-front controls for both bevels and miters. It was also the quietest saw…”
